Research Point: Contemporary Awareness

Mimi Mollica

Mimi has an eclectic collection of stories which she considers reportage and whilst I understand why she’s called it that I can also identify that she has a thread through the images which link them all to a story which can range over quite long distances.  Her interest seems to be for individuals and small groups of people and how they are affected by their environment, political situation and economics.  The thing that makes her different for me is the use of wide-angle and close-up images mixed and the way she’s involved the people she’s imaging as if they aren’t aware of her presence, yet she’s obviously right next to most of them.  Her use of light and colour adds new dimensions to the images and the fact that she appears to use B & W for about 50% of her work makes it reminiscent of the heritage of documentary and reportage.  Her work can be viewed here.
